An unusual name. Do you know where it originally came from?

Any idea where the “Hylton” in Odiarne Hylton Roche Lane (1891-1947) came from? That’s one of my family surnames.

His tree at Wikitree is far from complete - particularly on his mother's side https://www.wikitree.com/treewidget/Lane-23594/5 It could well be a surname through his mother Bessie Phoebe (Self) Lane (abt.1865-1934)

Originally it seems to have been a first name but I am not sure how it went to being a surname or the origins of the Odiarne family.

That's a very unusual name Anne. At first I thought it sounded and looked French. It's sad to think of his parents surviving the deaths of so many children. I know it wasn't unusual at the time, but it always makes me sad to think of it.
